‘Purpurea’, also known as Heliconia caribaea ‘Red’, is the red form of Heliconia caribaea. Bracts are bright red with a thin yellow lip. The plant is vigorous, erect and clumping, from 8-10 feet tall. Heliconia caribaea ‘Purpurea’ can grow in partial shade to full sun.

Grows from 5′ to 17′ with thin upright bracts. It may exhibit up to 25 bracts yellow to yellow-green on cheeks with the tips colored orange-red. Mature plants will flower most of the year. As many in Heliconia species flowers produce ample nectar that attracts pollinators.

Heliconia, derived from the Greek word helikonios, is a genus of about 100 to 200 species of flowering plants native to the tropical Americas and the Pacific Ocean islands west to Indonesia. Many species of Heliconia are found in rainforests or tropical wet forests of these regions.

Heliconia bihai [syn. Bihai bihai Griggs, Heliconia aurea R.Rodr., Heliconia caribaea Lam., Musa bihai L.] also known as Lobster Claw Heliconia. It is native to South America, especially Brazil and Guianas.

This plant is used as an ornamental plant. This upward facing flower of the Heliconia family, which acts as a cup, is a natural source of rain water for birds and insects.

Heliconia psittacorum, also kwon as Parakeet Flower, Parrot’s beak, is one of the most popular type of heliconia, probably due to the fact that it is one of the easier to care. The inflorescences of parakeet flower are very striking. The reddish pointed structures are called bracts. These tough, leathery structures protect the actual flower, which is yellow and quite delicate. Parakeet Flower blooms lasting 2 to 3 weeks.

Heliconia chartacea: Heliconia Pink Flamingo

Heliconia chartacea also known as Heliconia Pink Flamingo and Heliconia Sexy Pink. This Heliconia species is native to the American tropics, mainly found in Guiana and Brazil.

It is a herbaceous plant, with paired large oblong leaves. The flowering stems are pendulous. The bright pink color of the flower bracts is rare among heliconias, making it very easy to identify. The conspicuous pink part of the large and showy hanging inflorescences is actually the waxy bracts, with the small green true flowers half-hidden inside.
