A cherry blossom is the flower of any of several trees of genus Prunus, particularly the Japanese Cherry, Prunus serrulata, which is sometimes called sakura. Many of the varieties that have been cultivated for ornamental use do not produce fruit.

Japanese or foreign tourists who want to see Japan’s national flower – the cherry blossom, also known as “sakura” – can take a trip to Okinawa Japan’s southernmost Prefecture. Here, due to the warmer temperatures, the pink flowers start blooming on cherry trees from the middle of January until the middle of February, although usually cherry blossom season starts at the end of March in Japan.
