Carpenter bees [the genus Xylocopa in the subfamily Xylocopinae] are large bees distributed worldwide.
Carpenter bees can be important pollinators on open-faced flowers. Carpenter bees make nests by tunneling into wood, vibrating their bodies as they rasp their mandibles against the wood.
