Pereskia bleo: Rose Cactus

Pereskia bleo [Rose Cactus, Wax Rose, Leaf Cactus] is a leafy cactus, native to the shady, moist forests of Central America, that grows to a woody, prickly shrub about 2 m tall with large, orange-red flowers resembling rose blossoms.

After flowering, plants produce interesting, funnel-looking fruits which ripen into a bright orange colour.

In Singapore, Pereskia bleo, locally known as the ‘Seven Star Needle’ [Chinese: Qi Xing Zhen]. Local cultivate this plant for the leaves that are eaten raw to prevent or cure of cancer.
