Paphiopedilum: Lady Slipper Orchid

The common name of Paphiopedilum [paff-ee-oh-PED-i-lum] or “Paph” is Lady Slipper Orchid, refering to their unusual cup-like pouch in the flower. These fascinating plants display flowers that have an incredible variety colors and last for 6 weeks or more.

Originated from tropical Asia, there are more than 80 species. They are magnificent orchids and both the species and the hybrids have always formed a major part of good collections. They have a fascinating array of colors and forms and their ease of culture has attracted lifelong admirers.

A testament to its exotic nature, the blossom of this “carnivorous” orchid has a pouch that lures insects inside to pollinate not as food. Most insects were just unlucky and failed in finding their way out 😉

Regardless of the danger this plant may present to bugs, humans can enjoy Paphiopedilum indoors with very little care.
